Something you will probably not have had the chance to try on holiday before is panning for gold! However, at the Last Chance Basin, this is exactly what you will be able to do. Made famous by the gold rush of the late nineteenth century, the Last Chance Basin is, like all the places you will visit, set amongst a spectacular landscape. Situated at a roaring waterfall next to the appropriately named Gold Creek, you will be accompanied by a guide - authentically dressed as one of the original prospectors - and taught the traditional way of looking for gold. After seeing a demonstration, you can try your hand at searching in either the creek itself of a purpose made trough. This is a unique activity which is suitable for the whole family, and you will even be allowed to keep anything that you uncover!
The legacy left by the Alaskan gold prospectors continues with the chance to swap your cruise ship for a vintage steam train and an excursion on the historic White Pass and Yukon railroad route. Given its construction date in the late nineteenth century, the project was seen as being impossible to complete when it was first proposed. However, due to the fever created by the gold rush at the time, this incredible feat of engineering, one hundred and ten miles long, was pushed through in little over two years. First used in 1898, the route was built to transport hopeful gold hunters high into the Alaskan mountains and is still open today as an opportunity to experience what making the journey was like. If you are not all that excited about following in the footsteps of the prospectors of old, the trip is still well worth taking for the spectacular views on offer.
Of course, no cruise trip to Alaska would be complete without an opportunity to relax and take in its many incredible natural wonders. There is perhaps no better way to do this than on a seaplane trip, high over what is known as the Misty Fjords National Monument. An area of outstanding natural beauty, you will be able to see one thousand-foot waterfalls, imposing high mountains, beautiful glacial valleys and perhaps even some of the array of wildlife that lives there, including grizzly bears and whales!
